Easy Green Bean Casserole Recipe

Ingredients for Topping

  1. 6 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  2. 1/2 cup finely sliced shallots, about 2 shallots
  3. 1 box Absolutely Gluten Free Crackers
  4. 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  5. 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  6. 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  7. 1/4 tsp. garlic powder

Ingredients for Casserole

  1. 1 stick unsalted butter
  2. 1/4 cup chopped shallots, about 1 shallot
  3. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  4. 1 tsp. kosher salt
  5. 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  6. 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
  7. 8 oz. button mushrooms, finely chopped
  8. 1 Tbsp. fresh thyme leaves
  9. 1 lb. French green beans (haricots verts), trimmed
  10. 8 Tbsp. flour
  11. 20 oz. chicken stock, plus more if needed
  12. Fresh chopped herbs, such as chives

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Melt the butter for the topping in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the shallots and cook for about 10–15 minutes until just browned. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels, keeping the shallot-infused butter.
  3. Pulse the Absolutely Gluten Free Crackers in a food processor until crumbly. Transfer them to a bowl with the reserved butter, then season with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Set aside.
  4. Melt the stick of butter in a large cast-iron or oven-safe pan over medium-high heat. Add the chopped shallots and garlic and sauté until softened, then season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Add the mushrooms, thyme, and green beans. Sprinkle the flour evenly over the mixture, stir to combine, and cook until it begins to brown slightly.
  6. Pour in the chicken stock and stir until the flour is fully mixed in and the sauce thickens. Add a little more stock if needed to reach the consistency you like.
  7. Spread the cracker mixture over the casserole and bake for about 15 minutes, until the topping is golden brown.
  8. Finish with fresh herbs and the reserved fried shallots before serving.

Serves 8–10 as a side dish.

Why This Gluten-Free Green Bean Casserole Works

With the flour confirmed as gluten-free, this gluten-free green bean casserole brings together French green beans, mushrooms, shallots, garlic, thyme, and a creamy homemade sauce.

The topping gives it a different finish from a traditional fried-onion version. Crushed Absolutely Gluten Free Crackers are mixed with shallot-infused butter and seasonings, adding a crisp layer over the creamy casserole.

How to Keep Green Bean Casserole Gluten Free

Keeping green bean casserole gluten free means checking more than just the topping. Absolutely Gluten Free Crackers are certified gluten-free, but the flour in the sauce also needs to be a confirmed gluten-free option.

The same goes for chicken stock and other packaged ingredients, since ingredients can vary from one product to another.

How to Store and Reheat Green Bean Casserole

Store leftover green bean casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat it, place the casserole in a 350°F oven for about 10–15 minutes, or until warmed through. Keep an eye on the topping so it doesn’t brown too much.

If you’re making the casserole ahead instead of reheating leftovers, leave the cracker topping off until you’re ready to bake.
